Nepean Housing Corporation (NHC) is an award-winning private non-profit affordable housing provider in Ottawa which develops and supports communities families are proud to call home. NHC’s housing portfolio, with over 580 units, includes Dunbar Court, a recently built net-zero-ready, three-storey apartment building, recognized as one of the area’s most eco-friendly buildings.
NHC is seeking an Executive Director with strategic vision and collaborative leadership skills, capable of directing operations to foster robust, healthy, and sustainable communities.

About the Role
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the effective leadership and day-to-day management of NHC. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the ED helps define and advance the strategic direction of the organization, ensures operational excellence, and upholds compliance with established policies, legislation, and regulatory requirements. The ED is directly accountable to the Board for all organizational activities and outcomes.
As the Executive Director, you will be responsible for:
Leadership

Provide visionary leadership that fosters a cohesive, high-performing team culture that supports the achievement of strategic and operational objectives

Demonstrates strong human resource leadership, motivating and empowering staff, fostering trust and respect, and encouraging a collaborative workplace based on integrity, consistency, and open communication.

Promote and champion the organizational mission and strategic objectives, ensuring achievement of priorities as established by the Board.
Corporate Social Responsibility

Cultivate a corporate culture that promotes integrity, ethical conduct, equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout the organization.

Support community development initiatives with innovative housing related solutions that contribute to the strength and well-being of NHC communities.

Promote a culture of superior resident and customer service.
Human Resources Management

Ensure effective communication within the organization, including regular staff meetings and timely dissemination of Board decisions and relevant information.

Ensure compliance with employment policies and legislation.

Oversee performance management processes, including reviewing and monitoring work plans, annual evaluations, workload review, and staff training and development. Responsible for providing staffing recommendations to the Board.
Strategy, Budget, Financial Agreements and Risk Management

Provide strategic advice and timely information to the President, Board of Directors, and Board Committees; attend Board and Committee meetings as required.

Oversee and report to the Board on the execution and progress of the strategic plan and annual operating and capital budgets.

Collaborate with the Board to develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive risk management framework.
Housing Portfolio Sustainability and Growth

Monitor and assess government housing programs, funding, policy changes, and housing sector trends, and make appropriate recommendations to the Board.

Manage and respond to requests for proposals and grant applications in collaboration with staff, consultants and other external service providers.

Identify and evaluate development opportunities and oversee planning and/or construction of new housing communities.
Governance and Policies

Oversee the development, implementation, and compliance with key corporate policies, including policies related to governance, human resources, social responsibility, risk management, financial reporting, maintenance planning, community development, housing development as well as compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Work closely with the Board President to ensure effective communication, alignment, and collaboration between management and the Board.
Business Management and Operational Excellence

Establish and maintain strong internal controls related to financial reporting through appropriate policies and procedures.

Provide oversight and management of all day-to-day organizational operations.

Act as the primary spokesperson for NHC with stakeholders, the public, and elected officials.
What We Are Looking For
-
Senior Leadership Experience: Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in a middle or senior management role within a related organization including strategic plan experience

Industry Experience: Experience within the non-profit sector is key and experience within the social and affordable housing sector is preferred

Operational Oversight: Demonstrated hands-on experience managing operations, including financial systems management, policy management, and human resources

People Leadership Experience: Proven ability to lead and inspire high-performing teams and manage performance

Board Experience: Proven ability to effectively work with a Board of Directors

Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships, to negotiate, and to effectively interact with tenants, staff and board members

Political Acumen: Proven ability to understand, navigate and influence political and organizational dynamics to achieve positive outcomes
Education
-
Post secondary education in Business Administration, Public Administration or related field required
